A cleanup for roles and affiliations

I’ve been going through the character list and tidying up roles and affiliations. Some labels were too vague, some overlapped, and a few weren’t particularly helpful when trying to narrow down a guess.

The goal isn’t to list every title someone has ever held. It’s to give you clues that make sense and actually help you play.

Roles: what someone is or does

Roles cover things like titles, positions, and occupations. More specific labels like Knight, Kingsguard, and Bloodrider are staying, while Warrior covers fighters who don’t fit those categories.

Highborn describes someone’s noble background without automatically calling them a Lord or Lady. It can appear alongside roles like Knight because those tell you different things.

Smallfolk is a broader role for ordinary lowborn workers who don’t have a more useful role. Being lowborn doesn’t automatically give someone that role, though. A knight or a lord doesn’t need Smallfolk added just because of where they started.

Fewer labels, but not just one per character

Overlapping titles don’t always need to stack up. A King doesn’t also need Lord and Highborn listed underneath.

But important parts of someone’s story can stay. Becoming a knight doesn’t necessarily erase being a squire, for example. The clues reflect the character across the show, not just their final appearance.

I’ve also tried to avoid overly specific occupations that only describe one person when a shared role would work better.

Affiliations: who and what someone is connected to

Affiliations aren’t just houses. They also include groups, backgrounds, and strong connections to places.

That’s where labels like Dothraki, Sand Snake, Unsullied, and Second Sons belong. Bastard stays here too, rather than being a role.

Braavosi means a character is strongly associated with Braavos, not necessarily that they were born there. Free Folk is now the affiliation, while Wildling remains a role, sometimes alongside something more specific like Warrior.

There will always be a few awkward cases with Game of Thrones. I’m aiming for clues that feel fair and recognisable without turning every character into a wall of tags.

Thanks to Zander baratheon for pointing out some of these issues!
